Overview
Hair Musical officially known as Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is one of the early theatrical productions that left a great impact on the history. The rock musical is based on a joint script and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and Galt MacDermot was the music man. James and Gerome after an unsuccessful musical acting career started working on their own musical and an off- Broadway debut took place in 1967 and made its debut at Broadway in 1968 and in the same year it opened at London’s West End.
It is interesting to note that at first Hair musical was not allowed to run in theaters due to its controversial content involving violence, nudity, sexuality and illegal drugs and after some political intervention by the producer made its first run possible.
The 60s/70s musical is on its national tour and will be back at Broadway on July 5, 2007.
Story
The Hair musical is a story of young long-haired hippies living in New York City; they want to bring change in society and their modern thoughts about sexuality, politics, racism and their appearances are disapproved by their patents and the conservative American society as well.
Hair Musical is the story of Claude arriving in the New York City and then he joins a hippie group and falls in love with a rich girl Sheila, an inspiring political activist. The hippie group is led by the black guy Berger; he was thrown out of school for having long hairs. All the members of the hippie group have long hairs to demonstrate their desire for freedom. A group of young hippies burns their draft cards in a protest to stop war in Vietnam.
Main Cast
The Hair musical is a mix of cast from different races and backgrounds. The American tribal musical features 26 performers. The upcoming summer Broadway season features the original 2099 Broadway revival cast such as Steel Burkhardt as Berger, Paris Remillard as Claude, Caren Lyn Tackett as Sheila, Matt DeAngelis as Woof and Phyre Hawkins as Dionne.
Award
The Hair musical won Toby awards, Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
Review
Hair Musical tells the story of love, friendship and struggle done by the young hippies of 60s/70s era. The oldest American concept musical gives an insight in the inspirational lives of those people and how hard they tried to break barriers put into their ways when they expressed their desire for free love, friendship above racism and free sexual approach. Though music and the performances are fun and dance oriented but sex acts, drug references, and frontal nudity make it suitable only for adults and youngster.
